And maybe this is the hidden force underneath much of what is happening in the world right now:
Polarization.
Tribalism.
Ideological rigidity.
Authoritarianism.
Burnout.
Hyper-individualism.
Not just politics.
But the deep human need for belonging.
Working with Dr. Susanne Cook-Greuter’s research on maturity and Barry Johnson’s work on polarities, it struck me that one of the deepest polarities of our time may be:
Domination vs Maturation.

I recently mapped this visually in a polarity map (see below) exploring how belonging organizes differently across developmental stages.
At earlier stages, belonging often forms through:
- sameness
- certainty
- tribe
- hierarchy
- “us vs them”
This is not stupidity.
It is human.
It creates stability and survival.
But under increasing complexity, the same structures can harden into:
- fear of difference
- ideological certainty
- dehumanization
- control
- disconnection from life itself
At later stages of maturity, belonging starts expanding through:
- relationship across difference
- psychological flexibility
- paradox
- interdependence
- both/and & either/or thinking
Maybe the real developmental leap is not becoming smarter…
…but expanding the boundaries of belonging without losing coherence.
Because perhaps the future of humanity depends on whether belonging continues organizing around “us vs them”…
…or expands toward participation in life itself.
Maybe mature leadership is ultimately this:
Creating belonging without needing an enemy.
What do you think?
